Secondary DNS---When primary DNS is with another provider, or customer is running their own primary DNS, SoVerNet can provide backup DNS to ensure that domains remain available on the web if the primary DNS fails.
See the Hosting page.

top

Domains
Most commonly, an “owned” name which is registered and given one of several ‘dot’ extensions (e.g.: .com, .org, .net); used for both web and email addresses, i.e.: www.example.com or name@example.com .

Three types of domains are available through SoVerNet:

  • Standard registrations (e.g.: example.com) are available through SoVerNet at well-discounted rates; incurs $1.50/month hosting fee —See Domain Registration info
  • Geographic Domains—available at no registration fee (e.g.: example.rutland.vt.us); incurs $1.50/month hosting fee
  • Delegated Sub-Domains—no registration or hosting fee (example.cust.sover.net)

See the Hosting page for details on all 3 types.

Email sent to the site’s “mailto:” addresses for delivery to specified SoVerNet email addresses. Any mail to an unmapped “mailto:” is delivered to the account's primary email account. If delivery is required to a non-SoVerNet address, it must go first to a specific SoVerNet account and then be forwarded out.
See the Hosting page.

top

Email-Only
Additional email addresses without dialup login. These accounts provide a separate email address and password; the user must access their Internet connection via the primary username & password. Spam Controls & Virus Filtering are included, WebMail access is available, limited access to online tools; space can be increased. Only owner of main account can add or remove Email-Only accounts & space.

top

Email Quotas
Current maximum size of email box. Additional space can be added by owner of the main account. See Email FAQ.

top

ETRN (Extended Turn)
Email technology that allows a mailserver to be run on an intermittent connection like dialup. ETRN requires a Static IP and a domain, both of which may be from SoVerNet or another provider. Because the server's connection is intermittent, mail arriving when the server is offline is queued for delivery on SoVerNet's ETRN server until the customer mailserver comes online and requests delivery.

Newsgroups
Collective term for USENET discussion groups, an informal system of electronic bulletin boards voluntarily maintained by a decentralized network of computer systems. To view and post messages to a newsgroup, you need "newsreader" software; newsreaders are available as stand-alone applications or as part of most browser software and require configuring with the NNTP host info. Certificates are issued by a "Certificate Authority' (see above) upon confirming the identity and business validity of the purchaser. Three types are available through SoVerNet (all from Thawte), they differ mainly in the degree of investigation into, and validation of, the purchaser's business identity. Certificates enable the SSL protocol to encrypt information sent from a user's browser to the server on which it resides, and assures the user that they are indeed accessing the site of the business they expect to be dealing with. See the Ecommerce pages

top

Shell account
Account on SoVerNet's Unix-based shell server. A shell account has access to the text-based resources on the server: pine for email, lynx for browsing, pico for text files; FTP to & from the shell account space. All menus/directives are via text commands/keyboard use, no mouse, no graphics.

top

Shell email delivery

top

SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
Protocol for providing a secure environment for ecommerce and communications. When enabled on the Virtual Webserver by a Secure Certificate, it provides authentication between servers and browsers by verifying a server's identity, as well as providing encryption and validation of client-server communications. Wen addressess that begin with “https” indicate that an SSL connection will be used. See the Ecommerce pages.

top

Static IP (IP: Internet Protocol)
A permanently assigned IP Address that does not change. An IP address is a unique number used to identify a machine on the Internet (four numbers separated by dots [e.g.: 208.233.88.55]). Every machine on the Internet must have its own IP address. Static IPs are typically necessary for secure connections to Virtual Private Networks, certain financial and gaming sites, or when using some remote access software.
