Expanding Email headers
(These instructions are, primarily, from the University of Texas anti-spam site §. Additional links are at the bottom of the page.)
To see where an email is really from, or to report an email to an ISP’s abuse department, first expand the headers. Look for "Return path:" on the first line to see if it is the same as the "From:" address, and look through the "Received from:" lines to see the path it traveled. These are listed after the "Return path:" in chronological order, most recent first. The point of origin will be the last one listed, just above the "To:" and "From:" area. Often the "Message ID:" line will indicate the point of origin. To send the email to the originating ISP, once the headers are expanded, forward the email to abuse@what-ever-isp.com
Eudora:
Eudora has a 'Blah Blah Blah' button in the top of each received message which needs to be clicked to see full headers. Just click the button and then forward the message, and all headers are sent.
Microsoft Outlook:
To view message headers in Microsoft Outlook:
1.Open the mail message.
2.In Outlook 97, click the Options tab at the top.
3.In Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000, select Options. . . from the View menu.
4.The message headers are at the bottom of the window, and are labeled Headers: or Internet headers:.
Microsoft Outlook Express (depending on version):
Highlight the message, and hit CNTRL F3 to open the Message Source window and view headers.
OR---Right-click the message.
Click "Properties"
Click the "Details" tab to see the headers.
The easiest way to forward the expanded headers is to copy the expanded message (CNTRL A to select all, CNTRL C to copy), then compose a new message and paste (CNTRL V) the selected message into the message area. Put the forwarding address in the To field, fill in the Subject field and send it on its way.
Netscape Mail:
Once in the Netscape Mail program, hit the Toolbar option labeled VIEW, then select from the scroll down menu HEADERS and then ALL, and all headers are sent.
In Netscape 7---click View>Message Source to see the expanded header info
Pine:
The full-header command must first be enabled. This only needs to be done once, and you may already have it enabled. Enabling this option will allow the user to see and forward the complete list of headers with the 'h' command on a message-by-message basis.
To do this, type:
's' to enter the setup
'c' for config
' ' space a couple of time to page down the config options
until you get the page with enable-full-header-cmd
'n' to move down the page to the line with enable-full-header-cmd
'x' to set that option
'e' to exit config
Then, when you want to see or forward a message with the full set of headers you type 'h'. Otherwise it will look and act just as it does now. Answer 'n' if Pine asks you if you want to "Forward message as attachment".
