WINMODEMS

Windows users using certain types of internal modems may be experiencing difficulty in making and sustaining connections to the Internet.

The modems most commonly displaying these connection difficulties are 3Com Winmodems and Gateway Telepaths. These modems are typically prepackaged with computers from Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Micron, and Gateway

The "Winmodem Problem" (used to refer to problems affecting both types of modems) results from their not having been manufactured to properly take advantage of newly evolved, high-speed coding. Although they are 56k modems, their upward compatibility issues are recognized industry-wide. As server-end technologies continue to evolve, these modems will tend to feel their limitations more keenly.

We have found some potential solutions that involve adjusting the modem initialization string. The first init string will hopefully allow you to make a 56k modem by forcing your modem to use x2 technology rather than V.90. Winmodem users wishing to try this adjustment should change their init string to AT&F1&K0S32=66

If this does not fix the problem you can the following init string which will lower your connection speed. We have found that this adjustment will generally allow Winmodems to connect, but will limit connections to a maximum of 33.6 kbs. Winmodem users wishing to try this adjustment should change their init string to AT&F1&K0S32=98

Detailed instructions for making this change can be found below

We have been speaking with our representatives at 3Com on behalf of our Winmodem users and will post any updates we receive on this page.
