Changing Your Dialer's Access Number

Microsoft Windows:
   95  98  98SE  2000  ME

Macintosh:
   ConfigPPP  PPP/Remote Access  FreePPP  Apple Dialer

As new technologies evolve and demand for capacity increases it becomes necessary from time to time to phase out older access numbers that have become technologically obsolete or unscalable. Accordingly, we will be discontinuing many of our older access numbers over the next year in favor of new numbers. The step-by-step instructions below should help you in making this change in your connecting software.

  1. From the desktop double click the My Computer icon
  2. Double click the Dial-Up Networking folder;
  3. From the Dial-Up Networking folder, select your SoVerNet connection by clicking on the icon once;
  4. Select 'Properties' from the 'File' pulldown menu;
  5. Consult your access list and enter the appropriate local access number for your exchange in the space provided for a 'Telephone number.'

PPP/Remote Access

Beginning with System OS8, part of the connection software consisted of a Control Panel file called either, simply, "PPP" or more recently "Remote Access". Whichever you have may be accessed via the Control Panel option under the Apple Menu. Once open, both will look similar to the image below, and you will see where to change the access number.

  1. Choose Control Panels from the Apple Menu
  2. Open the PPP or Remote Access Control Panel;
  3. Click on the Config button;
  4. Enter the new phone number in the Phone num field;
  5. Be sure to click on the Options button, then go to Redial and make sure that other access numbers listed, if any, are removed. Close the PPP/Remote Access file and you should be all set.

FreePPP

  1. FreePPP Set up is accessed through the little phone icon on the right end of the menubar (if FreePPP was installed with "PPP Menu") or it will be found in the FreePPP folder on your hard drive. If you've made an alias to it, use that to open it.
  2. Make sure the small blue triangle in the lower left hand corner points down. If not, click it once.
  3. Click on the Account tab.
  4. Click the Edit button.

    If you are using an older version of Free PPP you may see a Phone number field on the next screen at this point. If so, you may change the phone number here and click OK to finish. Otherwise, continue with the steps below.
  5. Click on the Dialer tab. Change the phone number in the appropriate field.
  6. Click "OK".
  7. Close FreePPP Setup.

Apple Dialer

  2. From the "Provider" menu in the Dialer's menubar, select "Modify current..."
  3. Depending on what screen presents itself, you may need to click "Next" to get to the Provider Info page. You'll see "Sovernet," your username and so on as well as the access number. Replace the old access number with the new one from the most recent access list.
  4. Continue to click the "Next" button on each subsequent screen until you finish and are told to either "cancel" or "Restart". Click Restart so your change will be saved.
