WEB SERVICES —Every full Internet account comes with your choice of free web service options, the scope depends on your level of service. Single-User Dialups, Residential DSL, and Small-Business DSL accounts include up to $15-worth per month of various user-selectable features, among which are these web services: “Personal” Web Account (/~username), primary Domain Hosting, and additional web space. Multi-User Dialups, Business DSL and up, which may select up to $45-worth of free services, can select from a lengthier list of web options. All web services beyond those offered free can be added to any full account for very nominal monthly fees, so all accounts are very customizable.

A Personal Web Account, with a URL of “www.sover.net/~username,” includes 10MB of space, basic stats available via the basic-stats page (http://www.sover.net/stats.html), several basic CGI scripts, including a FormMail script, and a free listing on one or more of our 3 customer sites indexes.

Virtual Web Addressing (with a URL of “www.example.com”) is available in several configurations, detailed below. A VWA also includes access to user-generated CGI scripting as well as the basic CGI scripts, Server Side Includes (SSI), enhanced stats, and a free listing on one or more customer site indexes.

DOMAIN REGISTRATION

Domain Registering/Transferring — Registering a domain name (e.g.: example.com [.net/.org]) is one of the first steps toward obtaining a unique URL (e.g.: “www.example.com”) for your website, instead of the “www.sover.net/~username” address of the Personal Web account. Domains are also often registered just for use as email addresses (i.e. user@example.com). We offer you “one-stop” domain shopping—register your domain through SoVerNet, then get all your other hosting and domain services as well.

Domain Pricing—Our pricing for domains is excellent! We offer the most common domain name registrations (.com, .net, .org) at great prices! The hosting fee, per domain, is $1.50 per month.

Domain Transferring—Fees paid to your initial registrar keep your domain registered through the end of that period even if the switch is made mid-term. The transfer process requires payment for at least one year beyond the expiration of your current registration period. Thus, after transferring registrars, your next renewal date will be extended by at least one year. Once transferred, you will receive all of your renewal notices from SoVerNet and can manage your domain(s) through our Domain Management interface.

If you want to transfer only your registration, or only your hosting, but not both, you should contact our hostmaster for the info you’ll need to supply to your current registrar in order to get the process underway. • Geographic Domains (e.g.: example.county.vt.us)—We are the delegated provider for county geographic domains in Vermont. With Virtual-Web Addressing added, geographic domains have a URL in the format of "www.example.county.vt.us" (e.g.: "www.example.addison.vt.us").

  A geographic domain includes access to the same services available to a registered domain, and can be transferred from one hosting provider to another; the $1.50/month hosting fee applies.

• Delegated Sub-Domains (e.g.: username.cust.sover.net) These domains are also available from us on request. Delegated Sub-domains act much like other registered domains and have access to our virtual web services. Unlike other domains, however, they are not transferrable to another provider. With Virtual-Web Addressing added, the URL takes the form of www.username.cust.sover.net,; there is no hosting fee.

DOMAIN SERVICES

Domain Hosting — We will host domains for you at $1.50 per-month per-domain. There may be a registration fee to be paid to the registering company for each regular domain name, or no registration fee if using a geographic or delegated sub-domain. If registering a domain, be sure to check out our Domain Registration page.

Domain hosting means giving your domain(s) primary DNS services, including a place to live (“parking”), and delivery of all mail for the domain(s) in question to a single SoVerNet address. Hosting does not include web space, extended mapping, or other virtual-web services; domains that are hosted only (“parked”), are not viewable/visitable on the Web. (See Virtual-Web Addressing, & Virtual-Web Services, below.)

We can also provide secondary DNS and backup MX hosting services should you need them.

Email Mapping—Mapping is available for SoVerNet-hosted domain(s). This allows mail sent to a specific website “mailto:” address to be redirected to a specific SoVerNet email address. Thus, mail sent to info@example.com could be mapped to example1@sover.net, sales@example.com to example2@sover.net, and so on. Email sent to an unmapped domain, or to an umapped website email address, goes to the account’s default SoVerNet mailbox. If you require that mail go to a non-SoVerNet address, simply set up the SoVerNet address to forward to the address you wish. Mapping carries a monthly service fee of $1.50 per domain mapped.

Virtual-Web Addressing—provides your SoVerNet-hosted domain with the unique Uniform Resource Locator (URL) by which visitors browse to specific websites (e.g.: “www.example.com”), instead of the “www.sover.net/~username” address of the basic web account which uses the SoVerNet domain URL.

Virtual-Web Addressing gives access to our other virtual web services as described below, and is a available in 3 configurations.

The core product (“Virtual Web Addressing” or “VWA”—$5/mo.) includes enhanced site stats, basic supplied CGI, a /cgi/ directory for user-generated CGI scripts, SSI, and 10MB of space on the Virtual Web server. It requires hosting of the domain, which is not included and must be added separately —$1.50/mo.). To this basic VWA, you can add FrontPage Extensions ($1.50/mo). The VWAs can be selected as one of your free options if your account level is Multi-User or above. Single-User/Residential DSL/Small Business DSL accounts include hosting as a free option, but the VWA will need to be purchased separately. If all free options are used, any full account can purchase hosting & VWA features as Additional Services.

If you want all of these (VWA, hosting, and FP Extensions), the best deal is the VWA Full Package ($7/mo).

For second or third domains, where all you need is the unique URL for a hosted domain and no additionaln space, a VWA-only option is just $2 per month.

The Virtual Web-server supports PHP3 (suffix of .php3), PHP4 (suffix of .php), perl 5, and FrontPage 2002 Extensions.

Virtual FTP Directory —This does not require a Virtual-Web Address, just a SoVerNet-hosted domain. A virtual FTP directory (e.g.: “ftp.example.com”), is available with 10MB of server space by default ($5/mo). If you already have space on the virtual web-server and it is sufficent for your FTP and other needs, then the $2/month no-space option may be the way to go. Space is also available separately as an Additional Service. Both the directory and the extra space may be available as free options depending on the use you’ve made of your freebies, and the account level.

A Virtual FTP Directory provides you with space which serves as a transit and storage area for the transfer of files (via “FTP” — File Transfer Protocol) which normally might be too large to be attached to email. The Directory is set up on the virtual webserver, with several distinct sub-directories for different uses. For example: to provide a place to which the public may upload files; to make downloadable files available to customers or the public (price lists, informational materials, photos, etc.). See the FTP page, for details on enabling this feature.

—(Virtual-Web Addressing) enables access to the following “virtual-web services.” Some are available by virtue of the domain service in your account, others may need to be added as either one of your free account options or as a separately purchased feature.

• SSI — “Server Side Includes,” with the exception of the EXEC, are included with Virtual-Web Addressing. More information may be had from our Webmaster (link below).
• SQL Database Space—This service can share space in your virtual-web directory along with your ftp directory (if you have one) and any website files housed therein. SQL is set up with 10MB of server space by default ($5/mo). If your web-server space is already sufficent for your SQL and other needs, then the $2/month no-space option may be preferred. SQL commands can be used to work interactively with a database, or can be embedded within a programming language to interface with a database. In either case, creating a more dynamic and informative website. See the SQL page for details on enabling this feature.
• CGI-Bin Directory—($1.50/mo.) Specially set-up /cgi-bin/ sub-directory within a Virtual Web’s root directory for storing user-generated scripts. Very much like the regular /cgi/ directory, but accommodates scripts requiring a specific naming convention/path in order to function; seldom used any more,. but essential when needed.
• Web Logs & Stats (included with Virtual-Web Addressing)—Daily stats data is placed in a password-protected, browser-accessible folder (“www.example.com/stats”) within your virtual-web space. Log data is run through software called Analog, and displayed via a graphical front-end for Analog called Report Magic. Daily logs are kept for 30 days on a rolling basis; on day 31, the log from day 1 is overwritten. The raw data is available for you to download if you wish to archive on your own machine. Both Analog and Report Magic are available for numerous platforms, PC/LINUX/Mac and more, as free downloads. Report Magic includes a copy of the most current version of Analog. Other log analysis software may also be able to read Analog’s raw data files, best to check with the vendor to be sure.
• Password Protection of Web Directories—See our “Password Protecting Directories” page (http://www.sover.net/support/webfaq/pass.shtml) for more information, or contact Webmaster .
• Custom CGI Scripting—Check out our CGI page (http://www.sover.net/support/webfaq/cgi.shtml) or contact Webmaster for more information. We do not trouble-shoot your CGI scripts, but may be able to offer some basic advice. Your scripts reside in your own /cgi/ directory.
• Web Server Security—these services are more specific to e-commerce sites, and include SSL, secure certificates, and PGP. For more detailed info, visit our e-commerce section.

OTHER WEB-RELATED SERVICES

Web-Only Account —(monthly service fee, $5 w/10MB space, or $2 /no space) This is a special account designed specifically to address concerns of those who have turned creation/maintenance of their website over to a third party, but who wish to separate this function under its own username and password to protect the security of their base account. Web-Only Accounts use a specially-created directory on the virtual-web server to house your VWA files. Web-Only Accounts do not include dialup access or email.

FTP-only—(monthly service fee, $5 w/10MB space, or $2 /no space) Designed for those who require a separate, private directory for FTP’ing files. An FTP-Only account requires neither a hosted domain nor a VWA, and serves only as a repository for files in transit. The directory is accessed by a shared username/password combo that you provide to those to whom you wish to grant access.

Server Colocation—We offer colocation services at our two Centers— Burlington and Bellows Falls. These services are typically of interest and use to larger businesses using higher bandwidth. Colocation services are discussed more fully on our Business Accounts page.
