NewsLetter
October 2002

Friends,

Summer vacations notwithstanding, it's been a busy time---while our Engineers have been tweaking the basic systems, the Marketing folks have focused on adding some service enhancements (doubled referral credits, new roaming option, virus filtering, ...read on) .

Before getting into the "new stuff" we want to remind you to set up a CHALLENGE QUESTION if you've not yet done so. This has been a huge help for customers wanting to just call in account changes. By posing a Challenge Question and getting the predetermined answer back, we can validate the request immediately over the phone and drop the need for signatures. We can send you a form or download it from the web at http://www.sover.net/docs/challenge.html .

REFERRAL CREDITS DOUBLED!---Effective immediately, we're doubling the referral credits you can receive when new accounts indicate your username on the referral line of the Signup Agreement. For each new Dialup Account you refer, you'll receive a $40 data credit. Each new Broadband (DSL) Account is good for a $100 data credit. As always, the new customer must indicate your username on the Agreement, and the fine print is that the new account must remain active for 60 days in order for the credit to be allocated.

ROAMING: "Expanded Dialup Access"---We've been wanting for some time to be able to offer a solid "roaming" feature. Our "Remote Dial-In" service is perfectly adequate for many users, but we've received a lot of requests for something more "permanent," for use by those who are away for extended times. The first stage of our new "Expanded Dialup Access" (EDA) has been implemented throughout most of NH. (Hmmmm, got New Hampshire friends? Remember the doubled referral credits we just mentioned? ...)

In order to assess the need for similar local access in other areas, we've set up an online "roaming survey". If you would take a minute or two to complete it, letting us know where you would find a local dialup number for your SoVerNet account most useful, it will help us accommodate your travel access needs more efficiently. The survey is on our website at http://www.sover.net/docs/roaming-survey.html .

CURRENT LISTS OF ACCESS NUMBERS are available as follows:

Both current Numbers Lists are also available via the login tab on the Account Tools page."

AUTHENTICATED" EMAIL---In conjunction with Expanded Dialup Access, we're releasing "Authenticated" email, enabling EDA users, and those who access their SoVerNet email via a non-SoVerNet network, to send email via our SMTP server. To do this, change the SMTP host in your email settings to "smtpauth.sover.net" thereby authenticating you by means of your password rather than your IP address.

VIRUS FILTERING---Like many of you, we, too, have suffered under the onslaught of the Klez virus and others, and have been testing various anti-virus scanning/filtering technologies. We plan to implement anti-virus scanning on all mail in the very near future. This will not be an "opt-in/opt-out" feature, but will be in place for all email entering our system. If you do not wish your email scanned, and filtered as necessary, for the multitude of malicious code lurking around every cybercorner, you'll need to arrange for alternate email service, perhaps with something like Hot-Mail or Yahoo-Mail.

We hope that the virus filtering, combined with the Spam Control filtering already in place, will return email to its intended usefulness.

SPAM CONTROLS---In conjunction with the above, we remind you that opt-in Spam Controls are available to you, at no charge. Just go to the login tab on the Account Tools page and login, then click the Spam Controls link to set them up. Those of you already using the Controls are reminded, that---just as we warned--- spammers change tactics and you may find it necessary to return to the Controls and adjust your settings periodically if you find the spam volume increasing again. See our Spam Control FAQ at: http://www.sover.net/support/faq/c4a.html .

You may also want to set up some filtering "rules" in your email software to help weed out junk that slips through. For example--the Controls do not filter on specific words in the Subject. You can set your email program to do this, however, and to send any messages containing specified words directly to the trash. Some software will also filter on words in the body of message. For assistance, our Support team can help you via email to support@sover.net .

RETAIL LOCATIONS---The closing of the Ames stores facilitated our decision to shut down our retail locations and consolidate everything back under one (well, two) roof(s). Because we want to focus on our core strengths, we'd been considering a retail change for some time. Ames' demise seems the perfect time to roll up the kiosks and Shelburne Rd store. This step is one more in our evolution and bodes well for our future plans. Questions about paging accounts may be directed to our Call Center at (877) 877-2120.

And finally.....

REMINDERS---We are offering High-speed (DSL) and Voice services in many communities throughout the State---visit the Services/Products Locator page to find out what we can offer you. Then check out our Promos page to read about our "Fall Harvest Promo." As always, questions about any of this may be directed to either sales@sover.net or (877) 877-2120.
